The Best Way to Learn Guitar
Before we get into this topic, I want to make it clear that there are no “instant expert” lessons. There are several ways to learn the guitar. Here, we will take a look at the best way to learn guitar. These methods will range from self-teaching to private lessons to online methods.
Self-Teaching Methods
This is where you simply go to a music store and buy the easiest lesson books they have. All major guitar systems will start at the beginning and move forward. You would take this material home, sit down with it and teach yourself the lessons.
The drawback is that you will be all by yourself and have no idea if you are doing things right. You will not know if the music you are playing is correct or not. In short, you have no guidance or direction and your practice will be unfruitful, at best. This is not the best way to learn guitar.

Private Guitar Lessons
While providing the guidance and direction you need, a private instructor can be very expensive, usually somewhere in the $10 per half hour range. Over the course of a year, you can see how that adds up. Then there’s the pressure to learn each lesson quickly.
It is true that you will gain much from the teacher, but you will also be limited in time to master the lessons. When you go back each week, you will be asked to play the previous lesson first. Here’s the thing; even if you do not have the last lesson under your belt, the teacher will tell you to keep practicing that passage and then move on to the next.
Not a bad way to learn, but still not one of the best ways to learn guitar.
Online or DVD Guitar Lessons
These are the best methods for learning the guitar. Learning online has become very popular in the last 10 years or so. Whether you are looking at a DVD lessons system or an all online program, the benefits are the same.
First, you have everything you need right there in front of you. So you have ample material that starts you out right. The better online or DVD programs start at the very beginning and take you right through so you have a natural progression to the intermediate levels.
Second, you get an instructor who details the lessons and shows you the correct way to play the lesson. This is a double benefit to you as a student.
- You get to see the material written as well as hear it played. So you know exactly how it is supposed to sound.
- You get to actually see the teacher playing the lesson. The visual benefit is tremendous and really helps propel you forward.
Third is the cost issue, as we mentioned earlier. The overall price of DVD or online guitar lessons is much less than taking private instruction. If you are a guitar student on a budget (and who isn’t these days?), this makes online lessons the best way to learn guitar.
Last, you can move at your own pace and learn the harder passages before moving forward.
These are only some of the reasons that online or DVD lessons are the best way to learn guitar these days. I strongly encourage you to choose one of these methods. You will find that it is the quickest and more cost-effective way to become a guitar player.
