Right away, you will discover that there are many ways on how to play the electric guitar that differ greatly from an acoustic instrument. While acoustic guitars have a function that cannot be denied in music, electric guitars give you a wider range of sounds to choose from. For this, you will need what are called “effects”. Effects are activated by a foot switch, which is why they are sometimes called stomp boxes.

Effects are small electronic devices that alter the sound that comes out when you play. Effects are placed inline between the electric guitar and the amplifier. You would run one patch cord from the guitar to the input side of the effect; then another patch cord from the output side of the effect to the amplifier. You can do this with as many different effects as you like in a daisy chain.

At this point, you can use any or all of the effects you want by simply pressing the foot switch to activate or deactivate the effects pedal. The pedals are available in many varieties from the Metallica-like distortion/overdrive to a simple phase shifter or the swirling harmonic tone of a chorus pedal.

This is something that you cannot do with an acoustic guitar.
