1. Google “online guitar lessons”
2. Learn to tune.
3. Learn the 7 major chords (A,B,C,D,E,F,G)
4. Make flash cards.
5. Use the flash cards as fast as you can.
6. Learn the 7 minor chords (Am, Bm, Cm, Dm, Em, Fm, Gm)
7. Repeat steps 4,5
8. Learn the 7 7th chords (A7,B7,C7,D7,E7,F7,G7)
9. Repeat steps 4,5
10. Learn barre chords.
11. Repeat steps 4,5
12. Mix all the flash cards together.
13. Use them until you know the chords.

If you do that instead of trying to just learn songs, and you only stick to that for a couple months an hour a day… you’ll play guitar better than most people.

This is the most effective way to learn to play.

Go to your local Music Instrument store. Ask about lessons and pickup a Mel Bay’s Guitar Method Grade 1 book for starters. After you make it through the book you’ll know how to play notes and chords, read music, time signatures, etc.. Then go and learn all the cords as the guy said above. Mel Bay also has a chord book that will show you the standard fingering for all those chords. This takes time so if you add lessons it will go a lot faster. Once you get the hang of notes and chords you can buy songbooks or print guitar TABS off the internet to cover almost any song you like.

There are a lot of great places to go online and learn guitar. I am a big fan of online lessons as this is the way I learned.

Do a search in Google for “online guitar lessons.” Many of the sites will offer some free training to see if you like it. If so, you can then pay to get more detailed and specific lessons( very cheap usually). I like a website over a DVD because they are always providing new content.

I have added a source link that may help you out,

good luck,

-E
