is it really learn to learn guitar on your own, or are lessons preferred?

I have no music background, but I’m interested in guitar. I’m a huge fan of music and i’m starting to have an interest in some guitar basics, or atleast understanding the chords. Is it easier to learn online, or buy a DVD, or have a personal teacher and pay for lessons? I dont expect to be playing like van halen, but I want to get a few songs under my belt to actually enjoy the time spent, and enjoy the sounds I make from the guitar, instead of running frm the sounds i make. Whats the best approach? thanks.
